SUCH A PRETTY GIRL by Laura Weiss

A girl's pedophile father returns from prison. She is tortured by memories of his incestuous behavior as well as his continued harassment.

I don't know that I'd recommend this book. I learned a lot about creepy incest and rape, but even though it was about a dramatic topic I found it hard to get into. Good. -- Anna in Esopus

In this book, a girl chases her lucky T-shirt all the way to India and ends up volunteering at a children's home.

I learned a lot about India from reading this book. It made me want to go there because it sounds so colorful. It's a cute and fun read. Recommended. -- Anna in Esopus

NOTEBOOK GIRLS by Julia Baskin

Four girls write back and forth to each other in a notebook about sex, drugs and life in the city.

I read this book a few years ago and it really opened my eyes to all the stuff that teenagers were involved in. I would recommend this to a friend because it reads like something that could have been written by you and your friends. Outstanding. -- Anna in Esopus

The main character, Kaitlyn, deals with her sister's disappearance, drugs and an abusive relationship.

This book was well written and was easy to relate to -- even for people who have never been in an abusive relationship. It does give the reader insight into abusive relationships. Outstanding. -- Anna in Esopus

ELSEWHERE by Gabrielle Zevin

Liz has to deal with her untimely death in a place that is unlike any heaven she's ever heard of.

This book was so good! It made you think that the way these people were living, their death was the way we should be living our lives. It let me look at death and the after life from a different perspective. Outstanding. -- Anna in Esopus

TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER by Sarah Dessen

Macy has avoided dealing with her father's death for as long as she could, until one unusual summer job gives her a new perspective.

This book has a different meaning every time I read it. I love love love it! And it introduced me to the game of Truth, which I now use to get to know strangers or my friends better. SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS by Ann Brashares

Four friends keep in touch over the summer by sending one pair of pants to each other.

This book is so good I can read it a gajillion times and it still feels like I'm reading it for the first time! This book gives the reader a friendship ideal to aspire to. If I'm ever having trouble with my friends, I think, "What would the sisterhood do?" and there's my answer. Outstanding. -- Anna in Esopus

MY BROTHER'S KEEPER by Patricia McCormick

Toby tries to cover up his brother's drug problem and losing his brother to a substance.

This book was good, but not incredible. It does give you insight into how drugs affect people who don't use them, but are involved in the lives of drug abusers. Recommended. -- Anna in Esopus

NATURE OF JADE by Deb Calletti

Jade is a teenage girl who suffers from panic disorder. She keeps herself calm by watching the elephants at the local zoo. There, she meets Sebastian. They begin a journey of friendship and suffer through the ups and downs of life.

This book was amazing and hard to put down. It shows that there's always someone out there for you, and that you should never give up on them. Every teenage girl should read this book. Outstanding. -- MB in Esopus

This book has a variety of teen poets who have expressed their feelings. The poetry is based on problems or beliefs of the poets.

Poetry can be powerful. I would recommend this to a friend because it changed my views about things and I feel it can change teenagers' views. I learned that it may help to write things down to make yourself feel more comfortable in your own skin. Recommended. --Cori in Beacon

SAFE by Susan Shaw

This book is about a girl named Tracy who was raped in the summer in between seventh and eighth grade. She has to learn to cope with her issues and learn to feel safe again.
I would definitely recommend this book to a friend because I know that it would keep their attention and that they will get the same learning experience as I did. The most valuable thing that I learned as a result of this book is that I should hang on to those who are close to me while I am in a crisis because you know they will always be there for you. BROKEN CHINA by Lori Aurelia Williams

At 14 years old, a young girl witnesses the death of her two-year-old daughter. Caught up in the stress, she decides to drop out of high school to find a job. The job she lands is working at a strip club. Learn how she handles herself by reading this book.

Teen pregnancy, stripping, death, money issues and relationship problems are all treated realistically in this book. I would recommend this to a young teenage girl so that she could learn about the hardships that other people live through. Recommended. --Becky in Beacon

DOPING: ATHLETES AND DRUGS by Jason Porterfield

This is a good read if you're looking for information on real, famous athletes that did drugs -- it tells why they did what they did.

BODY FUEL by Donna Shryer

This book answers questions and talks about nutrition. It has really good advice and information. It teaches you how much to eat, what is best to eat and to make it fit into your lifestyle.

THE V CLUB by Kate Brian

A group of high school senior girls decide they want to apply for a scholarship. There's only one problem -- in order to get it, they must be virgins. One of them starts a virginity club, but their plans go awry when they begin to meet interesting guys.

I would recommend this because it shows a possible real life situation for high school seniors. I learned that it's OK to wait and that it's always good to have a good friend around to help you out with problems. Recommended. -- Jack in Beacon

A HEART DIVIDED by Jeff Gottesfeld

A native New York girl gets moved to Nashville when her father's job is relocated. To her, the new school is dull and weird until she meets Jack. She falls for him, but one little argument brings everything out of control when the families want to ditch the Confederate flag.

This book covers a lot of different issues, some of which aren't really talked about today. It delves into many racial issues and the division between North and South. There are also plenty of family issues and stuff about boys. Recommended. --Jack in Beacon

BORN CONFUSED by Tanuja Desai Hidier

A girl who usually doesn't listen to her parents finds a reason to listen, but for the wrong reason. Along the way, there is her best friend who hardly ever shows up anymore and she meets a boy. She falls in love in the end.

I might recommend this to someone. It deals with family issues, stuff about boys, sexual issues and what happens between friends. It's got some good stuff, but it's a bit long for the story it's telling. Good. --Jack in Beacon

Maggie and her family are constantly moving so she decides to do everything in her power to not become popular or make friends. She dresses and acts weird, but that only increases her popularity.

This book was funny and amusing, and shows the reader that people will like you if you are yourself, and that you don't need to pretend to be something you're not. Outstanding. -- Becky in Esopus

STEADY BEAT VOL 1 by Rivkah

In this book, a girl goes through random events after discovering her sister is gay. She eventually confronts her sister about that.

WHAT HAPPENED TO CASS MCBRIDE by Gail Giles

After Kyle's younger brother commits suicide, Kyle decides to get revenge by burying Cass alive, since she is the person he thinks is responsible.

I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend, only because it is really creepy and disturbing. It does teach us that one little note can set off an unforeseen chain of events. The plot was good, but it was too freaky. Good. -- Katie in Kinderhook

This book follows the week-long journey of Thomas Waminger, who is on a mission to find out about his Nazi grandfather. During his visit to Israel, something terribly shocking happens to him and others involved.

WAITING FOR NORMAL by Leslie Connor

Addie, who has recently moved into downtown Schenectady, is trying to adjust to her new life. Her mother has a new business scheme and is back to her old ways of all-or-nothing. Will Addie be able to cope?

This book is about a girl, Sadie, who has to move from her old school and friends because her mom and dad are getting divorced. To make matters worse, her dad moves halfway across the country. She lives in a small apartment with her mother and sister who she calls "WS." When she moves, she makes a new friend and has a new boyfriend, but things go wrong.

This book was entertaining and funny, with different characters and funny little drawings. I learned that no matter how bad things may be, your friends can always help you. Also, if something is wrong, you should tell someone who can help. I will recommend this book to friends, because I couldn't put it down. Good. -- Hannah in Esopus

A girl's parents get a divorce, forcing her to move to a new school. She is first the new girl, but soon meets some friends. Then she meets a boy who brought a gun to school. She gets depressed and has to see a therapist. Throughout the whole thing, she has a blog, which she uses to vent. It all ends well, though.

I might suggest this to a friend. I learned about how trying to make the right decision can be stressful. It wasn't one of my favorites, but it was still good. Recommended. --Jack in Beacon

This book answers many questions people have been dying to ask but haven't been able to. Although the info may have been a little graphic, it was good.

DIRTY WORK by Julia Bell

Oksana, a 15-year-old girl, got tricked into being sold as a prostitute. Hope, another 15-year-old rich girl, got kidnapped by the traders. Hope tries to escape and becomes friends with Oksana in the process.

This was a good book, that taught me friendship can be found in even the worst situations. Good. -- Joe in Esopus

Hope and Oksana are forced into a life of prostitution. They unite to try to escape. The difference between Hope and Oksana was that Hope is rich and Oksana is a poor girl from Russia.

I learned that it doesn't matter where you come from or who you are, people are the same. You can be friends with people from a different class. This book was good and showed how people who were polar opposites became friends. Recommended. -- Becky in Esopus

TURNING by Gillian Chan

Ben Larson's mother has just died. As a result, Ben has to move in with his father, Lars. Shortly after starting as his new school, strange things begin happening to Ben.

This book was not that interesting, although it did explore how difficult it is to get over the death of someone close to you. Not recommended. -- Maija in Kinderhook

AMAZING LIFE OF BIRDS by Gary Paulsen

Duane makes a journal of his experience going through puberty and the weird things he has during this time.

I would definitely recommend this book because it was very funny and interesting, and I learned boys can be weird and goofy during puberty. Outstanding. -- Katie in Kinderhook

Duane has now entered the stage in his life known as puberty and is questioning himself. His friend, Willy, is also going throught he same dilemma. The two have lots of new problems and struggle to overcome them.

BOUNCE by Natasha Friend

Evyn's father has just gotten remarried and she is having a hard time readjusting. Her new stepmother, Eleni, looks like Betty Boop and smiles too much. Her stepbrother is named after a cleaning product, and her twin stepsisters fight all the time. And then there's her older stepbrother, Linus, with his cute, curly hair and smile.

The book explores the difficulties that arise when you adjust to a new family and life. I would recommend this because it was entertaining and well written. Recommended. -- Maija in Kinderhook

TIPS ON HAVING A GAY (EX)BOYFRIEND by Carrie Jones

Belle, a teenage girl, finds out her former boyfriend is gay. The book follows her through her discovery of new love, gets over it, and moves on.

This book was amazing, fun and easy to read. I learned that even when life gets you down, you're going to be OK. If you don't give in things will get better. I think this book has a great message -- and it was hard to put down! Outstanding. -- Miranda in Esopus

Belle's longtime boyfriend Dylan gives her the news that he's gay and that he's going to be with his best friend, Bob, not her. Belle has to deal with not only having no boyfriend, but that he's also gay and is being persecuted for it.

I would definitely tell my friends about this book. I learned that you should always be yourself, no matter who hates you or judges you. If you're confident, nothing else matters. It sends a strong message to all of the teens out there who are misfits or stand out in someway. Stand up and fight!

IF YOU COME SOFTLY by Jacqueline Woodson

Jeremiah and Ellie fall in love, but face the obstacle of racism. Despite public opinion, they try to stay together and make the relationship work.
Although the book was good, and I learned that love can be found in any race and can overcome obstacles, I wouldn't recommend it because it wasn't that interesting. Good. --Becca in Garrison

97 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU FINISH HIGH SCHOOL by Steven Jenkins and Erika Stalder

This book lists things a high school student should do before they become a college student. The most valuable thing I learned from this was to be myself.

THIS IS WHAT I DID by Ann Dee Ellis

Logan was an awkward boy who had difficulty in social situations. After he witnesses an assault on his best friend and the girl he liked, Logan becomes more introverted and bullied. This book, written in Logan's own words, tells his story and how he overcame some of his problems.

I would recommend this book to a friend as a fast read. It was interesting, but not especially meaningful, even though is addressed the issue of experiences affecting the way people act in social situations. It was more of a fun, easy book to read although it had a much deeper underlying story of the trauma a boy went through and how it affected his life. Good. -- Nicole in Greenville

SUN SIGNS by Shelly Hrdlitschka

Kaleigh has cancer and is at the hospital quite often, so she attends school via computer. When asked to do a science project using the scientific method, Kaleigh is not sure what to do, so she asks her "distant student buddies." One of them suggests she does the project on astrology because she seems very interested in it. Kaleigh then uses three distant study buddies who are Leos as guinea pigs. She collects their information on whether their daily horoscopes are true or not. However, everything they say is not always true.

This book teaches the reader that people are not always who they seem, so you need to be careful of the internet. I would recommend this book because it was interesting yet informative. Recommended. -- Maija in Kinderhook

A girl who has cancer does a science project online with other people, but discovers that everyone is not who they appear to be.

The book is written in a different way and was very interesting. It shows that people can hide important things about themselves online. Recommended. -- Katie in Kinderhook

FALLING BOY by Alison McGhee

Joseph, who is paralyzed from the waist down, has to deal with a new place and get used to being paralyzed. He also has to convince a little girl he isn't a superhero. Joseph has to help his friend with a family crisis. He also learns to open up about how he got paralyzed.

I learned how friendships can be tested during hard times and how touch it can be to fit in when you are different. I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend because although it was OK, it was not a book that I really enjoyed reading. Good. -- Katie in Kinderhook.

CONVERTING KATE by Beckie Weinheimer

Kate is a teenage girl living with her widowed mother. Her mother is a strict believer in the Holy Divine Church. Kate's father was not, and read books such as To Kill a Mockingbird. After her father's death, Kate explores her religion, much against her mother's wishes.

This book encourages readers to explore their beliefs and learn new things. I would absolutely recommend this book -- it was an outstanding book that I couldn't put down. It was thoughtful, but not boring. Outstanding. -- Miranda in Esopus

Kate is trying to live her life with her mom, who is pressuring her to live the ways of the Holy Divine Church. But Kate wants to follow other ways of a different church. She wants her dead father to always be with her even though her mother doesn't want her to. She's living with things her mother doesn't approve of.

CAN I CHANGE THE WAY I LOOK? by Autumn Libal

Can I Change the Way I Look is an informative book about cosmetic surgery, makeovers and other body altering procedures that will change the way you look. The book talks about safe and unsafe ways to loose weight and build muscle.

The most valuable thing I learned from this book was about all of the harmful chemicals that are in makeup. I learned that a lot of these chemicals can have harmful, long-term effects on your body. GET WELL SOON by Julie Halpern

Anna Bloom, a depressed teenage girl, is committed to a mental institution by her parents. Although she hates it at first, she soon finds that it's not so bad and even wants to stay there.

I learned not to judge people by their appearance and that it's possible to find friends in places you may not expect -- and not to hate something until you've tried it! I would definitely recommend this book to a friend because it's funny and interesting, and hard to put down. Outstanding. -- Miranda in Esopus

Anna is in a mental hospital where she is not even allowed to touch people or throw her pillow on the ground. She tries to earn points to move up levels. During this process, she finds herself falling in love with another patient at the mental institution.

CHAT ROOM by Kristin Butcher

Linda's school starts an online chat room for its students. When Linda logs on, she becomes close to "Cyrano", but Cyrano may not be who Linda thinks he is at first.

PREY by Lurlene McDaniel

Ryan's new teacher, Ms. Settles, has the affection of all the boys. Ms. Settles asks Ryan to help her move furniture. Over time, their relationship becomes more serious than a student and a teacher.

Although this book explains that student-teacher relations need to stay in school, I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend because it creeped me out and I wouldn't want a friend to be creeped out. Not recommended. -- Maija in Kinderhook

Ryan falls in love with his high school teacher, Lori. They have a secret affair until Ryan's friend Honey uncovers the truth and gets Lori arrested because of it.
I wouldn't recommend this book because although it shows that affairs between teachers and students is wrong, no matter what the reason, it is still kind of creepy and has some disturbing parts to it. Marginal. -- Katie in Kinderhook

UNCOOL: A GIRL'S GUIDE TO MISFITTING IN by Erin Elisabeth Conley

This book is about how not being cool can, in fact, be cool. It talks about how if you don't fit in, it's OK. It also tells what people define as cool.

I would recommend this book because it was a quick and easy read, and I learned that people can not fit in and still be comfortable. Recommended. -- Katie in Kinderhook

This book has tips and information that make you more appreciative of being yourself. It also has lists of movies, songs and books where the underdog triumphs.

LIZARD PEOPLE by Charlie Price

This boy's mother has gone insane thinking people are lizards. She ruins her son's life when his Dad moves out, she uses drugs and gets a crazy boyfriend. Her son, Ben, gets to know a guy named Marco who tells him a bizarre story about him being from the future and Ben is trying to put it all together. The irony of this is Ben becomes insane as well.

An interesting and easy read, this book explains what a kid would have to do if he found himself in a similar situation. Good. -- Joe in Esopus

Ben's mother is mentally ill and while taking her to a hospital, he meets a man who believes he traveled to the year 4000. This causes Ben to become emotionally unstable and have a breakdown and realize he imagined the whole thing.

This book had an interesting plot and taught the reader that mentally ill people can be tough to take care of and they can really take a toll on the people who take care of them. Recommended. -- Katie in Kinderhook

THE DISREPUTABLE HISTORY OF FRANKIE LANDAU-BANKS by E. Lockhart

Frankie is an underestimated girl who goes to Alabaster Private School. Her boyfriend is in a secret society and he constantly lies to her. She does what she has to do to get noticed.
